Diversity of Water Frogs Pelophylax spp. in Turkey: Do Mating Vocalizations Mirror Nominal Taxon Delimitation?

چکیده

Informed conservation management requires exact knowledge on the species diversity of taxon group in focus within a geographic area, specifically occurrence endemics. In Turkey, there are three water frog taxa genus Pelophylax; one is widespread P. bedriagae, other two geographically restricted to either Thrace (P. ridibundus) or Anatolian Lake district caralitanus). The status Beyşehir caralitanus has been questioned since its proposal 2001. We recorded and analyzed advertisement release vocalizations at representative populations Pelophylax assess degree inter-taxon differentiation potential for premating isolation. found that bedriagae have much more similar than both compared ridibundus. A functional bioacoustic barrier between syntopy does not exist according our study. low mirrors earlier genetic, karyological, morphological findings. conclude frogs do deserve should be considered junior synonym bedriagae. Therefore, number endemic anuran Turkey decreases one.

Mating vocalizations of female frogs: control and evolutionary mechanisms.

Vocalization behaviors of anuran amphibians are universally sexually dimorphic. Usually, only male frogs give an advertisement call, while female frog calls are limited to a soft and simple release call which is specifically suppressed at mating. In a very few species, however, female frogs also give mating vocalizations. We examined possible mechanisms for control of this rare heterotypical be...

How fast do crossbills speciate? On assortative mating and vocalizations

The question of whether sympatric speciation (i.e. reproductive isolation of populations with overlapping distributions) is a source of biodiversity has always been controversial. So far, mounting evidence from only a few species, for example African lacustrine cichlids, African widowbirds and phytophagous insects, supports the notion that it occurs in nature. In the latter two, host shifts can...

First isolation of Mycobacterium spp. in Mullus spp. in Turkey

Ichthyozoonotic Mycobacterium spp. poses health risks both to fish and humans. In this study, the presence of ichthyozoonotic Mycobacterium spp. was investigated in red mullet (Mullus barbatus barbatus) and surmullet (Mullus surmuletus), widely caught species in the Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea. A total of 208 fish samples, provided from fishermen of Mersin province (Turkey) were studied. U...

Extensive mitochondrial heteroplasmy in hybrid water frog (Pelophylax spp.) populations from Southeast Europe

Water frogs of the genus Pelophylax (previous Rana) species have been much studied in Europe for their outstanding reproductive mechanism in which sympatric hybridization between genetically distinct parental species produces diverse genetic forms of viable hybrid animals. The most common hybrid is P. esculentus that carries the genomes of both parental species, P. ridibundus and P. lessonae, b...

Genomic Sequencing of Ranaviruses Isolated from Edible Frogs (Pelophylax esculentus)

Ranaviruses were isolated from wild edible frogs (Pelophylax esculentus) during epizootics in Denmark and Italy. Phylogenomic analyses revealed that these isolates are closely related and belong to a clade of ranaviruses that includes the Andrias davidianus ranavirus (ADRV), common midwife toad ranavirus (CMTV), Testudo hermanni ranavirus (THRV), and pike-perch iridovirus (PPIV).
